INTRODUCTION - Fortnite fans already have a wealth of devices with which to play Battle Royale. PS4, Xbox One, PC, Apple iOS and most recently, Nintendo Switch, following an E3 2018 announcement, Nintendo Switch.
That latest rollout for the game was not only welcomed by the larger community, but also, in just a few short days helped bump the Battle Royale player base to a mightily impressive 125 million players.
But there's one device still remaining and that's Android smartphones.
Epic Games have already confirmed they're working towards an Android release, but equally, they are also taking their time given the huge scale of the task at hand.
So, you're probably wondering, 'when can I download Fortnite Battle Royale on my Android smartphone?'. Don't worry, you're not the only one asking that question.
Thankfully, everything you could want to know, including the potential release date, whether the game will undergo a period of beta testing and also a very important warning to ward you off fake apps, can be found here.
From now until the release we'll be updating this page with everything you need to know about Epic Games next big release for the game.

Why is Fortnite Android taking so long?

There's a very good reason why the Android release date is taking much longer than expected and that's because, unlike Apple iOS, Epic Games are attempting to make the game compatible for a huge range of Android devices.
Previously, speaking to Forbes, Epic Games Nick Chester said:
“There’s a very wide range of Android devices that we want to support. We want to make sure Android players have a great experience, so we’re taking more time to get it right.“
It's unlikely that Fortnite will support ALL devices, but it's likely that Epic will cover a majority of the most used devices and most recent operating systems.

Fortnite Android Release Date - Latest Tweets

Epic Games are moments away from the games latest Fortnite Update 5.1 release and very shortly the patch notes will also be officially unveiled by the game's website.
However, a quick warning for anyone expecting or hoping for a Fortnite Android Release today. Don't get your hopes up.
In the past week, especially on YouTube, there's been talk of an Android release coming on July 24th, with lots of YouTubers pointing towards and official Fortnite picture and Twitter post by Chinese conglomerate Tencent.
The tweet reads: "Fortnite, wow! It's coming." with a big picture (seen below) showing a July 24th date.
This, however, is far from a Fortnite Android release as some YouTubers have suggested. If anything it's actually linked to the PC release in China in partnership with Tencent.
Tencent, for the uninitiated, is a company who sort of run a Steam Store equivalent in China. That's a really basic explanation, but if you want to know more Twitter user  is a great resource for information as he covers the digital games market in China & Southeast Asia.
This is where things get weird. Because we knew that the game was coming on the 23rd based on a past announcement made by the  in April. And we know the game DID go live in China last night.
But the previous Tweet that caused all the hubbub, from the Twitter account  has gone. In fact, the account has been suspended. We don't know the Chinese market that well, but we get the impression the account may have been fake, despite being reported on by PCGamesN and several more legit sites.
The bottom line? Don't expect any sort of Fortnite Android release to come today with the new 5.1 update. Despite suggestions from a few places online, there's no evidence to suggest this, or that the original source of the info - which was actually hyping Tencent not Android - was even real to begin with.

So when is Fortnite coming to Android?

The good news for those of you looking forward to an Android release for the game is that Epic has given an official timeframe for when the game will come to the Google Play store.
Talking to fans in May, Epic Games said:
“We are targeting this summer for the release. We know many of you are excited for this release, and we promise that when we have more information to share, you’ll hear it from us first."
For those wanting to put an official date in the calendar, when can we expect to see the Android Fortnite release?
Technically Summer 2018 started on Thursday 21st June and ends on Sunday 23 September.
So in theory, we could be playing the Android version any day now.
Realistically though, it's unlikely to be right away the second it is announced, as we suspect Epic Games will want a small beta test for the game ahead of a full-scale rollout, just like they did on iOS.

Fortnite Android Files in 5.0 update

Fortnite's latest content update (5.0) rolled out and as with every new patch released by Epic Games, the usual crowd of dataminers comb through the games new files for any significant changes.
Only this week, they found something very interesting concerning the as yet unreleased Android version of the game. According to Fortnite Tracker, a very reliable source of Fortnite info and leaks, the Android data is now in the game files since the last update.
A quick look at the files shows that there are now files related to 'Android_Engine' 'Android_Game' 'Adroid_RuntimeOptions' since the latest update.
Now, obviously, this isn't any sort of official announcement and it could yet be weeks away from release, but it's something. Epic Games are finally making inroads and adding Android files into overall game files.
That's progress and could hint that the release is coming much sooner than the potential Sunday 23 September deadline Epic Games set itself by saying it would be out 'this summer'.
For those interested, this wasn't the only significant new files for the game found this week, as there are also new lines which hint at the impending release for the .
Hopefully, it won't be too long before we're playing on Android and gifting skins to fellow players.

Nvidia Shield Android Release

Fortnite's Android release date feels ever so slightly closer this week (July 17th 2018) after the first - sort of - Android version of the Battle Royale game was released to the public in the US.
According to droid-life, over the weekend the new GeForce NOW cloud service was rolled out to Nvidia SHIELD TV devices across the US.
Now, for anyone who doesn't know, GeForce Now is effectively the company’s new cloud gaming service which allows existing Nvidia SHIELD device owners to play certain PC games such as Black Ops 3, Far Cry 5, and PUBG from a computer connected on the same network.
"Earlier this year we stopped charging a monthly service fee for GeForce NOW and closed down our game store," a message from Nvidia explains.
"We are happy to announce that GeForce NOW on SHIELD is now a free beta, which lets you play your PC games from popular digital stores - such as Steam, Uplay and Epic Games, and popular free-to-play games.
"It also supports multiplayer so can play with your friends online. For now, we will continue to offer a select collection of game for free to our GeForce NOW SHIELD members. and all your old saved games will be there."
Nvidia devices utilise the Android operating system and as such, this is, technically speaking, the first version of Fortnite to run on Android. Albeit, through a streaming platform and not your mobile phone.
But you would assume that with this Epic Games are only getting closer to the potential Android device rollout for smartphones.

Epic Games recently revealed that they are planning to invest in Amazon Web Services (AWS) for the purposes of Fortnite.
Since launch Epic Games has used AWS to run its worldwide game server fleet as well as backend systems and databases for Fortnite.
But now, Epic have declared they are going “all in” on AWS.
Chris Dyl, Director of Platform at Epic Games, said: "We’ve been developing our services on AWS since 2012.
"AWS has the broadest and deepest portfolio of services that allow us to stay focused on driving innovation in our products rather than the basic infrastructure needed to get or keep a service running.
"Their unmatched scalability has been instrumental in keeping pace with our rocketing player populations.
"We decided to go all-in using AWS because they enable us to offer a quality gaming experience to millions of gamers around the world, simultaneously.
"We are excited to work with AWS to expand our use of analytics, machine learning, and containerised applications using Kubernetes to make our sizable infrastructure even easier to maintain."
Some might argue that this is the next steps in Epic Games preparing their in-game infrastructure for the next six months, which will not only see the launch of Fortnite on Android (which will introduce a massive influx of new players) but also, Save the World going free, which again, will add significant strain on the games server usage.
Coupled with the news of Android files in the latest update, it seems like all systems are go for a launch in the next couple of weeks during Season 5.

How to sign up for Fortnite Android beta?

As of yet, Epic Games have not confirmed an official Fortnite Android release date or a beta testing period.
However, we're confident there will be one.
As and when players will likely need to sign-up at www.Fortnite.com for the chance to be one of the first to play the game on Android Smartphone devices.
Email invites will start rolling out soon thereafter. And assuming it's handled exactly like the games Apple iOS testing period any users who are invited will receive an email with a link to download the game from the Google Play Store.
Players who do receive invites from Epic will also, likely, get additional friend invite codes to share with friends.

Although Fortnite fans might still be waiting for the Epic Games to announce the release date for Battle Royale on Android, there is some good news following a new report by Bloomberg.
Incidentally, it doesn't make for good reading for Fortnite's main mobile rival, PUBG.
According to Bloomberg although Fortnite is only available on iOS devices, it is reported making five times the revenue compared to PUBG Mobile which is on both iOS and Android.
Likewise, the report notes that Fortnite only has (roughly) half the downloads on mobile devices when compared to PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds.
The core numbers appear to have originated from market intelligence firm Sensor Tower, who believe Fortnite has generated $92 million since the initial release.

In comparison, PUBG is believed to have grossed roughly $19 million over the same period.
Another significant difference between the two mobile games is that Fortnite's revenue comes mainly from their US market.
But it should also be noted that in Asia, the majority of smartphones run on Android and with no compatible game, it's understandable that the game would be lagging behind PUBG in that market.
The same report suggests that about 17 per cent of PUBG mobile's revenue is from Japan with a further 11% from South Korea.
All the more reason for Epic Games to get their skates on and release Fortnite on Android as quickly as they can.

Fortnite Battle Royale fans have been given some reasonably good news regarding the games proposed Android release.
Whilst the actual release date still remains a slight mystery - outside of knowing that the game is supposedly coming before the end of Summer - there has been an equal question mark over how many devices the game might support.
Obviously one of the big obstacles for the Android version of the game is how many different devices the game would need to be compatible with. Unlike iOS it's not simply a case of making the game work for one operating system.
According to , the Fortnite website currently lists several prospective compatible devices for the game, and as you might notice, you'll need a relatively high-end smartphone to play Fortnite on Android based on the list.
These possible devices include:
  • Google Pixel 2, Google 2 XL
  • Huawei Mate 10, Huawei Mate 10 Pro, Huawei Mate 10 Lite
  • Huawei Mate 9, Huawei Mate 9 Pro
  • Huawei P10, Huawei P10 Plus, Huawei P10 Lite
  • Huawei P9, Huawei P9 Lite
  • Huawei P8 Lite 2017
  • LG G6
  • LG V30, LG V30+
However, the good news is that, if you don't have one of the above devices you might not miss out, because in speaking with gadgets.ndtv.com, Epic Games confirmed that they haven’t released the official list of compatible devices, just yet.
“We haven’t announced anything in regards to support for specific Android devices. This list does not come from Epic Games and should be disregarded. The only real information you’ll find will come from official sources -- fortnite.com and other owned Epic channels," said a spokesperson for Epic Games to Gadgets 360 via e-mail.
With that proposed release date expected to arrive before Sunday 23 September (the official end of Summer) we won't have to wait long to find out which smartphones will support the game.

Finally, a warning

Whilst the game isn't available yet on Android, a number of sites and apps have been attempting to mimic the app in a bid to obtain sensitive data from users.
These Android apps look perfectly legit, but are in actual fact a wide variety of malicious apps capable of accessing cameras, harvesting and wiping device data and even recording audio on victims’ phones.
Users should beware of malware authors looking to exploit their desire to play Fortnite on Android," warned researchers at Zscaler’s ThreatLabZ. "We urge users to download games only from authorized and legitimate sources, such as Google Play."
